Mirjam Kooi took over the family business ‘Juwelier Kooi’ from her parents in 2004, which was founded in 1976. It was instilled in her and from the age of 12 she helped in the store. It was clear Mirjam would take over.
“My father was a typewriter mechanic and my mother worked in healthcare. Then an opportunity came up that they could take over the jewelry store in Burgum,” Mirjam says. “I think the choice came mainly from my mother to take this step. They just learned the trade by taking training and courses. I grew up with the store and fell in with it. My sister had nothing to do with the store, so it was pretty obvious that I was going to be the successor.”
“We have a wide range of brands, such as Leff Amsterdam, MVMT, Seiko, Pulsar, Fossil and Sinsi. But of course also the basic collection with gold and silver. As an extra we have the shop-in-shop of Trollbeads, of which we are the only one in Friesland. This means that we have the entire collection in stock. As extra services we have a waterproof tester for watches and our own goldsmith with a workshop. As a result, jewelry can be made immediately in our own workshop, giving us short lines of communication.”
“Ten years ago, we had a job opening for an employee out. We hired our current goldsmith, as an employee. She was a gemologist and diamond dealer by then, but my father was still doing the goldsmithing work. When my father quit, it made sense for her to take over. It also happens that customers come to us especially for her, which I think is really nice.”
“When we took over the jewelry store, we made immediate steps toward the online world. My parents had not yet developed a website for the business. So we needed a hosting package for website and e-mail. My husband, Marco, already had experience with Superspace from his role as a technician at Leeuwarden's local broadcaster. So the choice was not difficult to put the hosting with them. This is also how we brought Juwelier Kooi to the online world.”

For example, my father is still a clockmaker. That is a craft that not many people learn, but it is important that it continues to exist. That's why my aim is to keep my business going.
