As of now, PHP version 8.4 is available. This applies to both the hosting and CloudPress platforms. In addition, newly created sites are set to PHP version 8.3 by default.
Each new PHP version brings another big improvement in performance and security. Because the code is continuously cleaned up and optimized, each version becomes slightly faster and more efficient. At the end of November 2024, the latest PHP version, PHP 8.4, was released.
Is WordPress compatible with PHP 8.4?
WordPress generally works well right away with new PHP versions, but full stability is not always guaranteed right away. Plugins and themes also need time to be tested and adjusted. Therefore, we choose to always use one version "older" as the default. PHP 8.3, released in November 2023, now has wide support from plugin and theme developers, making it a reliable choice.
New features PHP 8.4
- Property hooks: Allows you to define logic for retrieving and setting properties, which makes for less boilerplate code.
- Asymmetrical visibility: Provides the ability to assign different access rights to properties, giving you more control over data manipulation.
- Performance optimizations: Several internal enhancements provide faster code execution and more efficient memory management.
- New DOM API: Includes standards-compliant support for parsing HTML5 documents, fixes several long-standing compliance bugs, and adds several features that make working with documents easier. The new DOM API is available within the
