At Superspace, we love to innovate. Inventing and building new hosting solutions that benefit our customers. In fact, shared hosting in the Netherlands has stood still for too long. We think there should be more innovation and improvement.
Brainstorm: what does perfect hosting for WordPress look like?
A while back we were brainstorming what better hosting for WordPress specifically would look like. It needed to be better for a number of situations:
- If a WordPress site suddenly gets a big traffic spike, the hosting should be easily scaled up to accommodate that spike. The limits of shared hosting should not get in the way of this.
- We saw many of our clients with larger WordPress sites migrate to an in-house server when shared hosting was no longer sufficient. An in-house server has more power, of course, but it's also a lot more complex in terms of maintenance and pricier. An intermediate solution would be perfect.
- The WordPress sites we host are increasingly international. The site must be fast not only in the Netherlands, but all over the world.
- There is quite a bit involved in making a WordPress site fast these days. Think page caching, database caching, optimizing images, setting up CDN and more. The new hosting solution needs to be super fast out-of-the-box, without requiring various plugins and setting up complicated configurations.
- We noticed that many customers were using security plugins to keep their WordPress sites secure. These plugins often did not work properly, and also made sites slower. By default, the new hosting solution should protect every WordPres site at the network and server level from all malicious traffic (such as DDoS, malware and brute force attacks) without the need for plugins.
- Our web agency clients should be able to give clients, colleagues and suppliers easy access to the WordPress hosting, under their own name and with limited permissions.
- When you install a WordPress site on a hosting package, you also want it to be properly and easily managed through the hosting package's control panel. The traditional control panels of shared hosting are a bit too technical, and do not have deep integration with WordPress. Installing and managing (bulk or otherwise) WordPress sites can be done much better and easier.
Conclusion: we are going to build CloudPress!
After this brainstorm, we came to the conclusion not to wait any longer for cPanel, Plesk, DirectAdmin or any other control panel provider, but to take matters into our own hands. We were going to build from scratch a new hosting solution specifically for WordPress that met our needs and requirements. We called it CloudPress.
We are now more than two years along, and the first 200+ WordPress sites are running on the CloudPress platform with great success. These include larger WooCommerce sites with many products and orders, and news sites with large traffic spikes.
What makes CloudPress so unique and innovative?
What makes CloudPress unique and innovative are the following points:
- CloudPress uses container technology, with each WordPress site running in multiple isolated containers. Container technology combines the simplicity and low cost of shared hosting, with the power and isolation of a dedicated server. You get the best of both worlds.
- Container technology also enables site scalability. We can scale both vertically (making a container larger in capacity) and horizontally (increasing the number of containers). While scaling up and down, the site remains online.
- We have partnered with Cloudflare, which operates the fastest network in the world. Every CloudPress customer can use their "Cloudflare Enterprise" package for free, worth $3000 per month. An optimized version of the WordPress site is copied to their 300+ data centers around the world, so your site loads quickly anywhere. Moreover, they stop malicious traffic towards the site.
- Each site also gets access to a Redis container, which allows database queries to be cached in memory. For super-fast communication with this Redis container, every CloudPress customer gets a free license of Object Cache Pro (worth $79 per month). Redis caching will give WordPress sites that do a lot of database queries a big speed boost.
- On top of Cloudflare stopping malicious traffic, we also have intelligent malware protection active. For this, we work with Monarx. Their solution can detect known and unknown malware in the PHP layer, and still stop code execution there.
- Finally, we created our own control panel specifically for managing WordPress. There you can easily create a new WordPress site, manage plugin updates, create backups of your site from restore, link domain names to your site, reset caching, etc.
- Web agencies can create subusers in the control panel and assign them certain rights. In the near future, the panel can even be set up with its own logo and URL.
And this is just the beginning. We continue to develop CloudPress to make WordPress hosting even better, faster, more secure and easier.
